save ur hardisk spaces by compressing ur movie

hello there.. :)

Hardisk (HDD) is the most valueable things on the computer. that's not because of its price, but its all about the contents.
yup, HDD store ur data so that u can use it everytime. the data u stored will be increasing by the time. do u know what kind of data is the most stored in ur HDD?
i can predict it must be MOVIES. everybody loves movie but not the size of the movie.

movie is a mixed file containing voice/music and image/video. in the digital world music and video consume large number of data.
the bigger data may represents the better quality of movies. that's why if u wanna watch a good quality of movie u need a bigger HDD to store it.
today, most of movies can be found in the dvd. dvd is a disc that can store up to 4,7 GB data. the data may be movies, musics, or others.
in a dvd u can find a movie with a good music and image quality and u can play it directly if u have a dvd player or dvd drive on ur PC.
but, what if the dvd's "lost"? ur movie will be gone. "lost" here may means ur dvd physically lost (just in case u forget where u put it) or the dvd is unreadable (too many scratch on the dvd, bad dvd quality).
so, u need to create a back up of ur dvd. the back up may be stored in the HDD and ur problem is temporary solved because the HDD cant be lost (it's attached to the PC, so if the HDD lost, ur pc must be lost too :D) nor it cant be unreadable (at least the lifetime of HDD is much longer than DVD).

as the time goes, ur HDD may contain too many movies and u dont have any spaces left to store movies. i have two alternatives :
1. buy a bigger size of HDD and u can store ur movies there. an 1 TB HDD is cheap now. it cost just about $75. u can store about 212 dvd movies :)
2. if u dont have much money u can try to "shrink" the dvd into a smaller data. i prefer to this one :thumb:

to "shrink" ur movies to smaller files is called compression. as i explained above, a movie consists of music and video. in the digital world they are always 1 or 0.
so what makes the data diffrent? it's called codec (compressor decompressor). music and video have different kind of codec. in the dvd movies the video codec is MPEG2 while the audio uses dvd-audio.
these kind of codecs is a loss less so that, the size of data may be very big. so, to compress ur dvd video simply by using a different codec that has a smaller size of data but still have good quality.

here we go :D
first, u need this kind of softwares

1.DVD decrypter
dvd decrypter is a software to copy ur dvd structure into ur HDD. a dvd videos usually protected by some kind of protection so that u cant copy it using a default windows copy manager.
dvd decrypter helps u to break the protection and u just can smile and drink up ur beer while the dvd decryter works
first u need to select the source of the dvd, then select the destination folder.

as u can see the figure above, u can choose only the main movie of the dvd. it marked by the size of the data ( 1 GB splitting --> vob files), an ifo file, and a bup file. if u just select the vob ones u still can compress it but the movie will be splited and u will lost the subtitle.
the part that i marked by red square is the information of the protection. just click decrypt and be patient :)

2. autogk
if u've finished copying ur dvd into HDD, u will need this thing :D
autogk is a software to "change the codec" i said before. in the cool words it's called "encode". so autogk is an encoder sofware :D
when u install it, just click next, next,...... next, until finish. just dont changes anything. :D

okay, after finish the installation simply just follow this step.
believe me, i've tried many kind settings of this software and i think this is the best for me to encode dvd movies into avi movies :)
a) select input file. in the dvd case, select the ifo files u copied before

b) select output file

c) go to the audio tracks and select the audio. i think the default one is the best.. :)

d) go to the subtitle part and choose ur subtitle. u may leave it if u dont want a subtitle. because the subtitle is "attached" to the movie file.

e) select the output size. for a dvd movie (usually below 2 hours) i prefer choose predefined size (700MB). it gives a good ratio between size and quality. u can choose higher size for better quality, but i dont recommend above 1400 GB since what we want here is a smaller size with (still) good quality. also, dont choose below 700MB for a movie :D

PS : i asume a dvd movie is an half and an hour long movie. so 1 hour and 30 minutes is equal to 700 MB. if u have a longer movie please use a bigger size in order to get the same quality (example : 3 hours equal to 1400 MB and a short 45 minutes movie equals to 350 MB)

f) then click the advanced settings. u need to set the image resolution, audio bit rate, and video codec.
for image resolution please choose between 640 - 688 in fixed width mode. for audio bit rate please choose vbr between 192 - 240 (the higher the better), and for the codec use Xvid instead of divX. i made a comparasion before that xvid gave a better quality than divX in the same file size. :)

g) the last step is add job and press start.
PS : for the first time use, u need to accept of somethings so u need to stand by just for a moment ;)

well, it's done ! :thumb:
all u need now is a cup of coffee, cigarettes, and snacks.. :D
it will take about 1 hour and 30 mins long to finish the job in a single core amd processor. the more powerfull ur rig the faster it will take.

happy encoding !!!

oh, i almost forget :D
the result of autogk is an *.avi files with xvid codec and mp3 audio codec. so, in the latest standalone dvd player it can be played :) u dont need to switch on ur PC just for watching movies. GO GREEN DUDES !!!

and u may need this software in ur PC ;)
1.K-lite mega codec pack
it contains almost all of audio and video codec so that u can play almost all type videos in ur PC.

2.autoMKV and/or HDConvertToX
since there are a better codec than xvid (video) and mp3(audio) this software may be useful for u. they can encode the dvd or even bluray into mkv format.
this format is famous since it usually used to store mpeg4/h264 codec (video) and aac (audio). these 2 codec give better quality in the same size than xvid and mp3 do.
these softwares can convert a HD movie.
one of the disadvantages is these codec cant be played in standalone dvd player but it just a matter of time :)

3. dvd pean
this is a all in one dvd ripper(encoder) it may be useful if u need others format instead of avi (xvid). it can encode dvd into its chapter (suitable for music video dvd --> u want the music vids individually for each song :D). but it's not a freeware.

4. format factory
this freeware can convert almost all kind of video into almost all kind of video format.
